We Wrestle: A Deep Dive into Ephesians 6:12 and Spiritual Warfare

“Our struggle is a close, grappling, hand-to-hand fight—not against physical humans made of blood and flesh, but against ruling spirits, against delegated spiritual authorities, against world-controlling powers of this present darkness, against evil spiritual beings operating in the unseen, heavenly realm.”

This is the full picture of Ephesians 6:12 from the Greek. It describes spiritual warfare as intense, close, and personal. Understanding the original words sheds light on the reality of the battle believers face—and the victory we already have in Christ.

Understanding the Wrestling: πάλη (palē)

The Greek word πάλη (palē) means wrestling or hand-to-hand struggle. In ancient times, it described two opponents locked together, each straining with all their strength to overcome the other.

Paul uses this word to emphasize the intensity and closeness of spiritual warfare. This is not distant or abstract—it is immediate, personal, and requires constant engagement.

Not Against Flesh and Blood: αἷμα καὶ σάρκα (haima kai sarka)

The Greek phrase αἷμα καὶ σάρκα literally means “blood and flesh,” referring to physical human beings.

Paul clarifies that the struggle involves spiritual forces, not humans. These are unseen, powerful entities with authority and influence in the spiritual realm.

The Hierarchy of Spiritual Forces

Ephesians 6:12 lists four types of spiritual entities:

Principalities — ἀρχάς (archas)
• High-ranking spiritual rulers.
• Greek root archē means “first” or “chief.”
• They exercise authority and leadership in the spiritual realm.

Powers — ἐξουσίας (exousias)
• Delegated spiritual authorities.
• Operate under higher rulers with assigned influence.
• Represent organized structures of spiritual control.

Rulers of the Darkness — κοσμοκράτορας (kosmokratoras)
• From kosmos (world) + krateō (to dominate).
• Influence cultural, social, and spiritual systems of darkness.

Spiritual Wickedness — πνευματικὰ τῆς πονηρίας (pneumatika tēs ponērias)
• Active, corrupting spiritual evil.
• Operate in the unseen, heavenly realm (ἐπουρανίοις / epouraniois).

How We Overcome: New Testament Victory

The New Testament emphasizes that victory comes through Christ and the Spirit, not human strength.

Submit and Resist — James 4:7

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Submission to God is the first step. Resistance to the enemy is powered by alignment with God’s will.

Put On the New Self — Ephesians 4:22–24

“You were taught to put off your old self and to be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and to put on the new self, created according to God in true righteousness and holiness.”

Believers are renewed in Christ to stand against spiritual forces and live in righteousness.

Stand Firm in Faith — 1 Peter 5:8–9

“Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith…”

Faith provides a stable foundation to resist deception and spiritual attack.

More Than Conquerors — Romans 8:37

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”

Victory is not survival—it is overcoming through Christ’s love.

God Crushes Satan — Romans 16:20

“The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.”

God is the ultimate authority over evil; believers share in His victory.

Full Context: 1 John 4:1–6

John emphasizes discernment and spiritual truth:

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God…”
“Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God…”
“You are from God, little children, and you have conquered them, because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world.”

Victory comes from the Spirit of God dwelling in believers, surpassing all spiritual opposition.

The Battle Belongs to the Lord

New Testament passages repeatedly affirm that spiritual warfare is fought under Christ’s authority:
• Ephesians 6:11: “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil.”
• 2 Corinthians 10:3–4: “The weapons of our warfare have divine power to demolish strongholds.”

Believers resist evil by standing firm in faith, truth, righteousness, and the gospel—all empowered by the Spirit.

Our Victory Position

Jesus secured ultimate victory:

“He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; He triumphed over them in Him.” — Colossians 2:15

The battle is real.
The victory is already won.

Believers stand in that victory. How?

Key: In Christ, filled & empowered by the Spirit while exercising authority given by God. Amen.
